One key thing I’ve learned in my personal “Wellness Challenge” this spring, is that the way to build lasting habits is to track and adapt your goals along the way.
I don’t mean “set realistic goals” right off the bat, because we can often surprise ourselves, and we won’t know what’s “realistic” until we try.
For example, I tried setting my “daily step” goal to 20,000/day since I had done it before for a few months, but I just cannot commit to that much time walking at this time in my life😂! So, instead of scrapping the goal all together, over a few weeks I realized having a weekly goal of 70,000+ steps works really well for me. This means if I am really busy one day and can’t make 10,000 steps, I can just walk more the next day! The old me might’ve gotten too discouraged by my “failure” and given up. But now I know that anything over zero compounds, and a little bit is better than nothing! I find this way of goal/habit setting to be way more encouraging and kind to myself.
This can work in all areas of your life! Another example is that I wanted to work on a specific post for you this week, but I have spent too much time on my computer writing for my actual job and am at risk for screen burnout once again! When I feel my “well” getting low, I now know I need to fill it up before it gets completely empty.
So, this week I’ve adapted my goal and instead of just skipping a post all together, I’ve shared this little tip on a more self-loving way to go about goal setting that I hope you find helpful too!
Also! I’ve been getting some feedback that people are like, “where are the poems?” which I found surprising! I guess I might’ve had a limiting belief that I’m the only person I know who likes to read poetry😅? So if you’re one of those people, I’ll share a springtime poem I wrote about picking up the LOML in Manchester🇬🇧 for some summer travels when we were still doing long-distance🥲:
I scooped you up
and we rode the sleepy rail…
your jet-lagged eyes
opening
with the train doors
disrobing
the streets
of footie victors
spilling
theirsongsand
slurrysloshes
into
the air
we bounced between
brick bars and brunch,
our feet in beat
with the Spring
in our step
the sun
in our hands
hot, all over the
travels ahead…
the calendar flips.
but i’m forever
ever
in young heartbeats
in our rosy conversations,
still singing
Somewhere in Manchester
