Happy Sunday, my loved ones!
I hope you are all able to have moments of rest here and there this week🌿.
I’m writing today because I need to give my elbow a rest from typing this week! I feel like I might be on the verge of tendonitis from work, so a heads up that I’ll be “gone fishing” until it heals. When I return (hopefully next week, but we’ll see!) I may cut down on my posts to once a week as well- as I feel like twice a week might be a bit too much to read anyways! :)
However, I’m not going to leave you with nothing! I read “The 4-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss years ago, and he talked about this little story by John Lane that has stuck with me ever since (text version below):
In case the quality of the photo is hard on the eyes, I’ve rewritten it here:
The rich industrialist was horrified to find the fisherman lying beside his boat, smoking a pipe.
“Why aren't you out fishing?” asked the industrialist.
“Because I have caught enough fish for the day,”
“Why don't you catch some more?”
"What would I do with them?”
“You could earn more money. Then you could have a motor fitted to your boat to go into deeper waters and buy nylon nets. These would bring you more fish and more money. Soon you would have enough money to own two boats…maybe even a fleet of boats. Then you would be a rich man like me.”
"What would I do then?”
“Then you could sit back and enjoy life.”
“What do you think I'm doing right now?”
I thought about this story again this week when our power went out for a day, and how nice it was to do things that didn’t involve technology.
Time really s l o w e d down.
And I truly felt rested afterwards! However, you don’t have to go camping or have your power go out to enjoy this! As you may remember from my post about a “phone-free holiday”, just taking little breaks away from technology can be enough to make simple moments feel luxurious.
So even if you’re not a rich business man, I hope you can channel the fisherman, slow things down a bit, remember that money and fame isn’t everything, and gift yourself some time to enjoy life💛.
